AI in the clouds: artificial intelligence is transforming aviation before our eyes
Airlines and airports are already using a number of AI-based solutions in the areas of fuel optimization, air traffic control, on-board service or vehicle maintenance. However, the sky is the limit, as aviation continuously generates a huge amount of data, which provides further opportunities for the development of AI solutions in order to increase efficiency, improve the passenger experience and achieve sustainability goals – points out Dániel Berecz, Head of Engineering at Lufthansa Systems.
The demand for air passenger and cargo transport is growing dynamically, according to forecasts, this demand is expected to double by 2040, and an average annual growth of 3.4% can be expected. There is therefore enormous potential in the sector, but while airlines focus on increasing efficiency, providing high-quality customer service, adhering to industry standards and sustainability, they also have to address a number of current environmental challenges, such as extreme weather and a severe shortage of professionals.
In this situation, more and more developments are relying on artificial intelligence and machine learning, using the vast amount of data collected during everyday operations.
“There is an increasing demand for data-driven solutions that prioritize passenger experience and operational agility. In addition, by involving AI, we can anticipate and proactively manage challenges such as emerging maintenance tasks or imbalances in passenger traffic. This approach not only improves efficiency, but also increases operational reliability, making artificial intelligence a key tool for strategic planning and disruption management,” says Dániel Berecz, Head of Engineering at Lufthansa Systems.
