Agrometeorology: corn would benefit from rain

There is a drought in many places in the Great Plain and in the north and south-east of Transdanubia, corn would need abundant rainfall for the formation and growth of the grains, the National Meteorological Service wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

In the analysis published on the website, it was written: the weather has been very hot in the last 8-10 days, with severe thunderstorms in some places, but in most parts of the country less precipitation has fallen than is usual at this time. The amount of precipitation for the last thirty days shows a deficit of 20-50 millimeters in a large area of the country. The upper half-meter layer of the soil is critically dry in the northern and southeastern regions of Transdanubia, in the wider area of Budapest, and in a significant part of the Great Plain, but the moisture content of the deeper soil layers is still sufficient for plants.

The heat has lasted for two weeks with short interruptions, the air did not cool below 20 degrees Celsius at night in many places

According to the analysis, rapeseed and barley harvesting has already been completed in most places, wheat harvesting is in full swing, and the work was progressing well on the warm, dry days. Maize and sunflower are well developed in most places, the maize is in the state of cresting, and the sunflower is blooming. For the time being, they can still find water in the deeper soil layer all over the country, but especially in the Great Plain, they are increasingly lacking moisture. For their further optimal development, abundant precipitation in the coming weeks would be necessary for the formation and then growth of the grains, they wrote.

Often changeable, but mostly warm weather is expected in the next week

On Friday and Saturday, there may be several waves of rain, showers, or even heavy thunderstorms, and after a short break, there may be showers and thunderstorms again in several places from Monday evening to Wednesday evening, with more precipitation likely in the northern half of the country. Overall, there is a chance of 10-20 millimeters of precipitation in many places over the next week, and 30-40 millimeters may fall in the northern part of the country. The temperature will drop slightly at first, then the weather will warm up again at the beginning of next week and the heat will temporarily return with maximums around 35 degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, however, cooling will begin from the northwest due to a cold front.
