Agrometeorology: Night frosts to return next week
Further heavy rain is expected until the end of the week, so the soil will continue to recharge, but next week a drier, arctic air mass will arrive and night frosts will return, which could damage stone fruits that have already started to bloom in many places – HungaroMet Zrt. wrote in its agrometeorological analysis on Thursday.

According to the analysis, in the first three days of the week, in the southeastern part of the country, almost half of it, it rained mostly 5-20 millimeters, but in the northwest it was almost none, and on Thursday another 3-10 and 10-25 millimeters of rain fell in the northeast. The upper 50-centimeter layer of the soil has a favorable moisture content almost throughout the country, with drier parts still remaining in the northwest. However, most of the rain is needed in the Great Plain, where the deeper soil layers have not yet recharged. In the second half of the past week, the daily temperature fluctuations were very strong, with maximums typically around 20 degrees Celsius, while light frosts developed at night. The frosts have already stopped this week, but the maximums have only fallen back in permanently overcast and rainy areas, the daily average of the soil temperature measured at 5 centimeters is currently around 10 degrees.
The spring development of autumn sowings has already started due to the very mild weather of the past week
After the heat, rain has also arrived and will arrive throughout the country, all of which creates favorable conditions for development. Rapeseed survived the winter in good condition, but the picture is not so uniform for autumn cereals, because many of the fields sown in the dry autumn period have lagged behind in development, which they now have to catch up with. The stands will likely be able to withstand the temporary water cover and inland water spots that will develop in several places in the coming days.
The sap circulation of early stone fruit trees has also started, flowering has already begun in the southern areas, while in the northeast there are only swollen buds
Apricots are damaged by frosts of minus 4 degrees Celsius in the bud bursting development phase, and minus 2 to minus 3 degrees Celsius in the flowering phase, so the frosts expected for next week, mostly between minus 2 and minus 4 degrees, will be on the verge of damage – they wrote. According to the forecast, another 20-30 millimeters of precipitation may fall in large areas this week, meaning that the soil will continue to recharge, and temporary inland water spots may even form primarily in the northern and northeastern areas. At the beginning of next week, a dry and cold air mass of arctic origin will arrive, so the temperature will drop significantly, and despite the abundance of sunshine, the peak value is likely to be only around 10 degrees Celsius. Frosts will return at night, but minimums around minus 5 degrees are likely only in frost-prone, wind-sheltered areas.
