Magazine: Agri-food systems emit more and more harmful gases
According to the latest study of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), from agri-food systems the food supply chain emits so much greenhouse gas that the segment will soon overtake agriculture and land cultivation in this respect.
FAOSTAT conducted a study in 236 countries between 1990 and 2019. Data from this reveal that agri-food systems were responsible for 21 percent of the global CO2 emissions in 2019 (which was actually a big improvement, as this share was still 31 percent back in 1990). Pre- and post-processes of food production require the use of lots of fossil fuel, and this is the main reason why the sector is such a big contributor in greenhouse gas emission. //
