The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH) has ordered a full-scale Advent food safety inspection in Christmas fairs, markets, shops and temporary sales points.

The NKFH told MTI on Friday that government agencies under its professional management will inspect catering establishments, as well as Christmas fairs, markets, market halls and shops selling dried fruits, oil seeds, candies and nuts during the Advent period.

The aim of the inspections is to ensure that the festive preparations during the Christmas markets, food safety and hygiene rules must be fully enforced.

– they wrote.

They explained that the number of catering establishments and the turnover of food increases during the festive period, which poses an increased food safety risk.

The aim of the inspection ordered by the NKFH is to examine the compliance of catering establishments that have relocated to Christmas markets with food safety and hygiene regulations, but the inspectors also pay special attention to heat treatment, storage conditions, traceability and waste management.

They noted that the reason for the inspections is that in the case of bulk products, there is a high risk of cross-contamination and lack of traceability, and that inadequate hygiene conditions and undocumented origin are common during seasonal migrations.

Furthermore, aflatoxin contamination is common in oilseeds, sulfur dioxide content and mold in dried fruits, and mixing, the separation of the packaging from the product and the missing allergen labeling in the case of granulated sugar pose a risk, they added.

They also stated that the inspections will also cover domestic and imported shelled fruits sold in bulk without packaging (walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, chestnuts, peanuts, pistachios) as well as for checking items, as the seasonal increase in turnover increases the risk of distributing products of inadequate quality, incorrect markings, and possible falsification of the place of origin.
