For the green transition, some raw materials can cover the need in Hungary to a certain extent
In Hungary, there are raw materials from which the need for the green transition can be covered to a certain extent – said associate professor of the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Natural Sciences János Áder in the podcast of the former head of state called Blue Planet, published on Monday, which is also available on the most popular video sharing portal.
Ferenc Molnár explained: there are copper ores, there is sand from which high-purity quartz can be obtained for the production of optical cables. Copper, lead, and zinc are not currently mined in Hungary, partly due to environmental and partly economic factors, but technology is developing rapidly, so some raw materials can be economically mined.
He spoke about the fact that the European Union is also looking for sources of raw materials, and they are also investigating what socio-economic factors affect the extraction. They assessed which are the so-called “critical raw materials” necessary for the development of the continent’s economy, of which there are few, on the one hand, and the supply through global trade chains is not ensured – continued Ferenc Molnár.
