Based on Visa data, it becomes clear how the French economy will be stimulated by increased consumption during the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris
Visa, the official payment technology partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, has released new data on the first consumption results of the opening weekend of the Olympic Games.
Based on data from the leader of digital payments, the Olympic Games have a positive effect on stimulating local trade:
Small businesses in Paris experienced a 26% increase in sales compared to the same period last year, based on purchases by Visa cardholders, during the first weekend of the Olympic Games.
The most significant increase in spending can be seen in theaters and museums in Paris, this category increased by 159%. There was a 42% increase in grocery stores, a 36% increase in restaurants, a 21% increase in retail goods, and an 18% increase in entertainment.
The largest proportion of spending outside of Europe comes from Visa cardholders from the United States (29%), the most significant annual increase in spending was recorded by Visa cardholders from Japan (+129%) and Brazil (+33%)
The proportion of contactless payments for international spending in Paris was 78%, 9% more than last year
Paris flight bookings up 39% in pre-Olympic period compared to same period in 2023
The travel expenses of those under 35 increased by 120%
The number of travelers arriving in Paris from the United States increased most significantly compared to the previous year (+64%), followed by Germany (+61%) and Spain (+27%)
Consumption also increased significantly in cities hosting Olympic events outside of Paris, such as Saint-Etienne (+214%), Lille (+100%) and Marseille (+38%)
Charlotte Hogg, CEO of Visa Europe, highlighted: “As a nearly 40-year-old Olympic movement and a supporter of the Paralympic Games since 2002, we know first-hand the impact the Games can have on boosting the host country’s economy, in line with Visa’s aim to to create opportunities for everyone everywhere. Our latest data shows a significant increase in consumption by Visa cardholders during the weekend of the opening ceremony.
