Frankfurters are the second most popular meat product
Over 27,000 tonnes of frankfurters are sold annually. Retail sales exceeded HUF 24 billion, in terms of value in the September 2006 – August 2007 period. According to the Retail Index of Nielsen, sales showed a 5 per cent drop in terms of volume, but a rise of 3 per cent in terms of value. Frankfurters are the second most popular meat product with a market share of 16 per cent in terms of volume. Packaged frankfurters are increasingly popular, with a market share of 73 per cent. The growth of the category was mainly due to the expansion in the more expensive, packaged segment. The market share of private labels rose from 30 per cent last year to 36 per cent, in terms of volume. Sales are increasingly concentrated. The combined market share of modern store types (over 400 square meters) rose from 65 per cent in 2006 to 72 per cent in 2007. Average prices reflect changes in the points of purchase. The price of packaged frankfurters rose by 3 per cent, whereas that of non-packaged products grew by 7 per cent.
