1. Negroni: the classic recipe is 3cl Dry Gin, 3cl Vermouth Rosso, 3cl Campari and soda. It is said to have been first made by a bartender called Fosco Scarselli in 1919, at the Caffè Casoni in Florence, for an Italian count called Negroni.
2. Old Fashioned: in the second half of the 19th century cocktail conservatives wanted their drinks to be made the old-fashioned way. The ingredients of the Old Fashioned, consisting of whiskey, Angostura and a sugar cube, began to be swapped around again 15-20 years ago.
3. Margarita: if there is one drink the various incarnations of which encompass everything from the sublime to the frivolous, it is the margarita. It was inspired by a pre-Prohibition cocktail called the Daisy, and it contains tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice.
4. Espresso Martini: it is said to have been invented in the Soho Brasserie in London. The cocktail is made from vodka, liqueur, espresso coffee and sugar syrup, and many say it has reformed the world of coffee liqueurs.
5. Daiquiri: the history of the daiquiri dates back to the late 19th century. According to experts, when done right, there is nothing like the seemingly simple combination of rum, lime and sugar.
6. Whiskey Sour: this cocktail may have changed flavours over the years, but today’s versions are mostly faithful to the drink – essentially a combination of whiskey, sugar, lemon juice (plus, increasingly, egg whites) – that was first made in the mid-1800s. //
