Revitalizing rural areas with the help of young people
Young women and men in rural areas play an important role in supporting economic growth and development and securing the future of agriculture and rural communities. However, many economic, social and cultural challenges prevent them from reaching their full potential, and more information is needed to understand their support needs. Meanwhile, in countries across Europe and Central Asia – and in many parts of the world – agriculture is becoming less and less attractive as a career for young people. Getting young people involved in farming is crucial for food security and livelihoods.
However, young people working in agriculture often lack access to important tools and platforms, including markets, decent work opportunities or participation in political decision-making. Effective and efficient youth and agricultural policies and policy frameworks therefore require a better understanding of their problems so that targeted measures and approaches can be adopted.
To identify and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing young people in rural areas of our region, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting the second Regional Rural Youth Forum in Budapest. Starting today, youth stakeholders (decision-makers, young farmers, civil society and others) from 22 countries in the region will hear examples of successful support for rural youth, examine the challenges they face and possible solutions. As the rural population of our continent ages, the forum will also provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable family farming.
“Despite high overall levels of development, inequality is growing across the region, reflected in high levels of youth unemployment, the exclusion of marginalized groups and gender inequalities. All these challenges often lead to rural exodus,” said Viorel Gutu, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative, at the opening of the forum.
