Phytoplasma (FD), which causes golden yellows of grapes, is one of the most serious quarantine pests that poses a serious threat to vineyards. The basis of effective control is the use of healthy propagation material, continuous monitoring of infections, and the rapid elimination of infected vines. In addition, control against the American grapevine cicada, which spreads the pathogen, is also of paramount importance.

The cicada overwinters in the form of eggs in the woody parts of the vine, mainly under the bark of 2-3-year-old canes. Although many eggs are removed during pruning, if the cuttings remain in the area, the local population of the pest can be significantly increased. This increases the risk of the spread of the infection, so proper treatment of the vine is crucial.

In restricted and demarcated areas, compliance with official regulations is mandatory

This includes the destruction of infected plants, the implementation of mandatory plant protection treatments, and the burning of prunings. The latter is not just a recommendation, but a prescribed obligation, and infected plant parts must always be destroyed on site.

It is also advisable to ensure the destruction of branches in non-restricted areas

The rules for burning are determined by local government regulations in indoor areas, and by national legislation in outdoor areas. If burning is not possible, an alternative is to shred the branches and work them into the soil, during which the cicada eggs are also damaged and decomposed. Proper treatment of prunings is one of the most effective preventive measures against the spread of FD. The use of integrated pest management and the cooperation of producers are essential to curb the infection.
