2022 was a year of extremes in the global takeover market
In 2022, we experienced a serious upswing in the Hungarian takeover market, and within that also in the field of private equity investments. The uncertain geopolitical situation, the continuously rising interest rates and the skyrocketing inflation rate all reduced domestic transaction activity in the second half of 2022. The transaction experts of DLA Piper Hungary prepared a summary of the trends defining the domestic and global M&A market.
2021 reached a global peak both in terms of the total value and number of transactions. However, after the record year in 2022, a significant slowdown was felt in the global M&A markets. While in the first half of the year the momentum of transactions of the previous period was still maintained, in the second six months the largest overall decline since 1980 occurred, which was mainly due to transactions over 50 billion dollars, the so-called was experienced in the case of mega-deals.
“It is true that transaction activity decreased significantly in 2022, but in context this is more the result of a normalization process, as the decline did not reach the level of 2017 either in the number or value of cases”
– highlighted András Posztl, office managing partner of DLA Piper Hungary.
