Spring field work in Hungary is coming to an end
The spring field work is proceeding at a good pace, and the farmers will soon finish sowing. Thanks to the favorable winter and spring weather, as well as the rainfall that has fallen in recent weeks, domestic farmers can expect a good average yield of autumn-sown crops.

Based on the report of the National Chamber of Agrarian Economy, the sowing of spring barley, seed peas, oats and sugar beet has already been completed, there are also few sunflower seeds in the bags, while 97% of the planned area for corn and 93% for potatoes have been sown have already been planted. Soybean sowing has also progressed significantly compared to the previous week and has already reached 90% completion.
The total spring sowing area of 2.1 million hectares essentially corresponds to the magnitude of previous years, but there is a shift within the sowing area
Compared to the average of previous years, the 714,000 hectares of sunflower sowings planned by the farmers for this year is larger, and the 871,000 hectares of maize sowing indicated in their intention to sow is less compared to previous years. The rise of sunflower compared to corn is due to market processes and the lower-than-average corn yield due to last year’s drought year. Among the smaller crops, the 67.4 thousand hectares of soybeans, the 13 thousand hectares of sugar beets and the nearly 6,700 hectares of potatoes should be highlighted.
The condition of the sown stocks is satisfactory, however, the cooler weather than usual at this time has left its mark on the crops in some places
Due to the rainy weather, protection against fungal diseases is currently of utmost importance. The winter and spring weather is also favorable for wheat, barley and canola sown in autumn. If there are no extreme weather conditions in the period remaining until harvest, an adequate harvest can be expected for autumn-sown cereals.
