The harvest is coming to an end in Békés County
The farmers of Békés county will soon finish their harvesting and sowing work. According to the summary sent to MTI by the Békés County Harvest Coordination Committee, the 84,466 hectares of sunflower area were harvested, almost 230,000 tons of crops were produced; the county average was 2.7 tons per hectare, which is more favorable than expected.
According to Béla Barabás, secretary of the Békés County Agricultural Association, the average yield above 3 tons would have been really good; there are farmers who have reached and even exceeded this level. However, given the weather conditions, the value of 2.7 can be said to be good. In addition, the purchase price of sunflower is improving; compared to the initial price of 150-160 thousand forints per ton, 180-185 thousand forints are available; with the latter, “the farmer may even have a small profit”, he said.
Maize was grown on 85,265 hectares, about 500 hectares are plowed; the harvest rate is currently 98 percent
Almost 457 thousand tons of crops were produced, the county average was 5.5 tons per hectare. Béla Barabás said that at the beginning of the harvest, there were reports of a high level of toxin contamination, but as the work progressed, the measurement results improved significantly, but the negative news had a price-reducing effect. Currently, the price of corn is between HUF 72,000 and HUF 77,000 per ton, which is higher than last year, but according to the secretary, the farmers would break even at a purchase price of HUF 90,000 to HUF 100,000.
Potatoes were harvested in Békés: 2,832 tons were harvested on 177 hectares0
Soybean harvesting is also coming to an end, an average yield of 1.9 tons has been registered on almost 4,000 hectares. The harvesting of the sugar beet grown on only 33 hectares has not yet started, because the reception at the processing factory has slowed down, the farmers only pick it up when the factory can receive the crop – it was said at the committee meeting.
Sowing work has also begun, which is now somewhat hindered by the rain
The area sown for autumn cabbage rape is decreasing nationally, in Békés it will probably only be grown on 4,900 hectares instead of 7,000. According to Béla Barabás, there are several reasons for this. On the one hand, the harvest brought losses in recent years; on the other hand, at the end of August and beginning of September, when sowing would have been ideal, the soil was very dry and the conditions were not favorable. He told MTI that they believe that the area planted with wheat will increase slightly, and there is a chance that the area planted with sunflowers will also increase somewhat next year. According to the data of the coordination committee, winter wheat is planned to be sown on 95,000 hectares, currently at 20 percent. Autumn barley will grow on 24,000 hectares according to the plans, currently 16,800 have been sown.
