Contrary to expectations, annual British food inflation did not accelerate in January
Twelve-month inflation of 4 percent, the same as in December, was measured in January in Great Britain. Analysts expected an annual inflation rate accelerating to 4.2 percent for the first month of this year.
According to a report by the British Statistics Office (ONS) on Wednesday, consumer prices fell by an average of 0.6 percent in January compared to December, and this was the main reason why inflation did not accelerate last month, despite the increase in the official ceiling on household energy prices.
Year-on-year core inflation – which excludes the prices of food, energy, spirits and tobacco – was 5.1 percent last month, also the same as in December.
