Butter and milk powder prices significantly above intervention price in Germany

According to the German Central Milk Market Service’s flash report, raw milk purchases in Germany were 0.1 percent lower than the previous week, while they were 2.2 percent higher than the same week last year. In Germany, the selling price of bulk butter decreased by 10 percent in the 34th week of 2025 compared to the same week last year, and that of skimmed milk powder by 5 percent.

On the Kempten Commodity Exchange, the selling price of 25-kilogram bulk butter was 705 euros/100 kilograms, and that of 25-kilogram bags of food-grade (intervention quality) skimmed milk powder was 240 euros/100 kilograms in the 34th week of 2025. The price of bulk butter was 218 percent higher than the intervention price in the week under review, and that of skimmed milk powder was 37 percent higher than the intervention price.

Butter and cheese became more expensive, milk did not

According to AKI PÁIR data, in July 2025, compared to the previous month, the selling price of Trappist cheese and portioned butter increased (both +1 percent), that of sour cream, cow’s curd, 1.5 percent fat canned long-life milk and 2.8 percent fat canned fresh milk did not change, while that of 2.8 percent fat canned long-life milk (–2 percent) and fruit yogurt (–4 percent) decreased. According to the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the consumer price of 20 percent fat sour cream (+2 percent), Trappist block cheese and fruit yogurt all increased by 1 percent, while the prices of 1.5 percent fat ESL milk, 2.8 percent fat canned UHT milk, 12 percent fat sour cream and portioned butter (both -1 percent), and 2.8 percent fat pasteurized ESL milk (-4 percent) decreased in the same comparison.
