From October, UPS customers delivering to the European Union will be able to use a self-developed artificial intelligence tool to automatically generate customs codes. This solution streamlines a critical factor in European international trade.
Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, the new tool provides customers with the Harmonized Product Description (HS) codes required by the authorities of the European Union, based on the description given when the shipment was sent.
The EU accounts for about 15% of the world’s goods traffic, so it is no coincidence that UPS’s AI-based tool becomes available just as the new EU import control system (ICS2) is being introduced. ICS2 requires businesses to provide a detailed list of their customs-cleared products.
The tool will especially be of great help to small and medium-sized enterprises outside Europe, who most often do not have the time or lack the necessary knowledge to determine the appropriate HR codes for their products. At the same time, thanks to the tool, UPS customers can now focus on their business activities instead of the complicated processes of customs clearance.
