We are among the TOP5 exporters in Europe, with wheat and corn driving our exports
Hungary is one of the leaders in European grain exports. According to the analysis of Akcenta experts, in 2024 we sold grain abroad worth 1.93 billion euros (+14% year-on-year). Hungarian producers rank 5th in Europe in terms of export value and are among the continent’s leaders in terms of corn, barley and sorghum. Wheat accounts for almost half of exports, its export value increased by 16%, reaching 890 million euros. The main destination countries for Hungarian grain exports are Italy, Germany and Austria. The current drought may affect the results in 2025, so exporters should consider currency hedging strategies.
According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), the value of Hungarian grain exports in 2024 reached 1.93 billion euros, compared to 1.69 billion a year earlier. This represents a 1.38% share of the global market, securing 16th place worldwide and a high 5th position in Europe. Italy remained the largest trading partner with imports of 781 million euros (+11%), followed by Germany with 324 million euros (+124%). Austria held steady at 287 million euros, while Romania decreased to 106 million euros (-28%) and Croatia to 51 million (-11%). Akcenta experts have identified five main grain categories that contribute the most to export earnings.
Agriculture, especially grain exports, is extremely sensitive to seasonal fluctuations and market volatility. Small and medium-sized enterprises, which form the basis of this sector, are particularly exposed to exchange rate risks, as even minor currency fluctuations can affect the profitability of contracts. That is why the use of hedging strategies is so important. Thanks to this, entrepreneurs can better plan their income, protect their margins and operate more safely, even when they often have to wait weeks for the payment for the goods. Akcenta, as a company close to farmers and businesses, prioritizes the safety of its customers, especially in difficult times such as the current drought. With us, entrepreneurs can plan their exchange rates, protect their margins, and incorporate these solutions into their business strategy, because while weather conditions are unpredictable, exchange rate risk can be effectively managed
– says Kusala Eduard, Commercial Director of Akcenta’s Hungarian office.
