According to the association of egg producers, Penny Market threatens the Hungarian market with cheap imported eggs
Cheap foreign table eggs have appeared in Penny Market’s Hungarian store network, according to the Association of Hungarian Egg Hybrid Breeders and Egg Producers, the store chain’s move could lead to chaotic conditions in domestic egg prices. According to Penny, the vast majority of the selection is made up of Hungarian eggs, but in the case of products with a price cap, an even more important aspect is to fully serve the needs of customers, to ensure budget-friendly prices, even with imported goods.
In its statement sent to MTI on Thursday, the association emphasized: according to Hungarian producers, Penny Market’s behavior is incorrect, because there is a sufficient and adequate supply of domestic table eggs on the Hungarian market.
Penny Market has established Hungarian supplier relationships in the domestic market, but the chain has recently rejected offers from its partners here. According to the association, this is not a fair step towards domestic producers, while the import may be able to break down egg prices, which are already showing a downward trend, in the entire Hungarian market – the organization stated in its announcement.
The players in the Hungarian egg sector are willing to engage in reasonable price competition, but production costs determine the price level below which production can no longer be profitable for businesses. The income-generating capacity of edible egg production is low, and the loss of price stability can destroy businesses on the domestic market in a matter of seconds – the egg producers’ association drew attention.
