Aldi US Plans Its First Store Near Times Square
Aldi is planning to open its first store in Central Manhattan near Times Square in 2026, marking a significant expansion into a high-footfall urban area, according to media reports.
The new flagship store, spanning approximately 2,322 square metres, will be located within The Ellery, a luxury residential building.
While smaller than typical Aldi stores, its strategic placement aims for maximum impact.
This will be Aldi’s second Manhattan store, complementing its East Harlem location and presence in other boroughs like Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
This move, a partnership with Taconic Partners and National Real Estate Advisors, places Aldi at 312 West 42nd Street, at the intersection of Hell’s Kitchen and Times Square.
The store will feature a curated selection of products tailored for both residents and visitors seeking a quick and easy shopping experience in this expensive part of the city, the Progressive Grocer reported.
‘Significant Milestone’
Chris Daniels, regional vice president at Aldi US, described the opening of the retailer’s first Manhattan store as a “significant milestone”, noting that it would expand access to affordable groceries in a high-demand location and offer New Yorkers a simpler and more convenient shopping experience, according to the report.
Aldi US, based in Batavia, Illinois, operates over 2,500 stores in 39 states, with plans to open an additional 200 outlets by the end of this year and a total of 800 by 2028.
Nearly half of its 2025 openings will be conversions of former Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations, acquired in 2023.
Aldi also entered the Nevada market with its first Las Vegas stores earlier this year. The German discounter is already the third-largest grocer by store count in the country, excluding dollar stores.
