Tetra Pak expects growing milk consumption all over the world
One of the world's largest food processing and packaging company expects that by 2012 milk consumption will increase by 2.2 percent all over the world.
The company's Tetra Pak Dairy Index report (Dairy Outlook), summarizes the predictions. The six-monthly publication examines the changes in consumption trends of the dairy sector. According to the index, the liquid milk consumption in 2008 had reached a record of 258 billion liters with 1.6 per cent growth compared to 2007. Over the past four years, the consumption of milk and other liquid dairy products rose by 2.4 per cent, despite the fact that prices have risen strongly over the past two years. Dennis Jönsson, President of Tetra Pak Group also sees two trends in the global milk consumption, which will lead to an increase in the future. One is the continued growth of emerging markets, the other is the increased interest in packaged milk. In the last four years, most of the increase (95.8 percent), came from emerging markets: India, Pakistan, China and the Middle East. The reason to the increasing consumption of milk and liquid milk products are the increase of the breeding population, the household income rises, and the appearance of new eating habits.
