The mild spring weather in April was favorable for crop production, but the cool, mostly dry weather in early May affected crops. Precipitation fell mainly in Transdanubia, but in some parts of the Great Plain, barely a few millimeters of rain fell. There were very significant regional differences in the moisture content of the soil layer – near the surface – necessary for the early development of corn and sunflower.

According to operational reports assessing the situation of spring agricultural work, the planned sowing area of spring-sown arable crops in 2025 was 2 million hectares, about half of which is located in the North and South Great Plain regions. The largest spring sowing area was calculated in Békés (203.8 thousand hectares), Hajdú-Bihar (177.2 thousand hectares), Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok (170.4 thousand hectares) and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg (163.8 thousand hectares) counties, each with a share of approximately 8.3–10.3 percent. In most of the counties, spring work was nearing completion by mid-May.

At the time of the report, with almost 100 percent completion, the maize sowing area was around 822.8 thousand hectares 24.1 percent of the planned

832.4 thousand hectares of maize sowing area is located in the Northern Great Plain, 20.2 percent in the Southern Great Plain and 19.2 percent in the Southern Transdanubia region. Sunflower sowing is almost completely completed, the sown area is 746.5 thousand hectares, which is 814 hectares less than planned. About a third of the sown area is located in the Northern Great Plain (31.3 percent), and almost a quarter in the Southern Great Plain (22.3 percent).
