Starbucks is redesigning its iconic white takeaway cup across the entire European region
The most exciting version of Starbucks’ iconic white takeaway hot drink cup to date has been launched in Europe today. The result of extensive research and development and innovation in cup manufacturing technologies, the cup’s existing plastic inner lining has been replaced with a mineral-based layer. Single-use plastic lids are also being replaced with fiber-based alternatives, which are coated with the same mineral-based layer.
The familiar Starbucks design remains the same, but the hot drink cup and lid are now certified for home composting and are widely recyclable. The new hot drink cup offers the same premium experience to customers without requiring any additional work or effort from store operators (or employees).
A common criticism of plastic-lined coffee cups is that they are difficult to recycle, as the plastic liner has to be separated from the paper surface. Many general recycling and waste management facilities do not have the necessary technology, so it is often necessary to invest in separate coffee cup collection and recycling systems. The new hot drink cup and lid, on the other hand, can be collected in a selective bin or composted at home, so it does not pollute the human or natural environment in any way.
The new hot drink cup is made in a pan-European collaboration, using certified wood from northern European forests and a mineral-based coating developed in Brescia, Italy. The cup is designed and manufactured by Transcend at its factory in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly, Wales.
The new hot drink cup and lid will be gradually introduced in stores in European markets this year; Among the first ten countries, they are already in use in Spain and Hungary, and will be introduced in Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria this month, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland later this year.
