Asparagus exports increased both in quantity and value
According to KSH data, 5.0–6.7 thousand tons of asparagus were harvested from 1.2–1.5 thousand hectares in Hungary in recent years. According to experts, due to the sudden warming, asparagus picking started three weeks earlier than usual this spring.
According to KSH data, the foreign trade asset of fresh or chilled asparagus rose to HUF 3.02 billion in 2023 compared to HUF 2.2 billion the previous year. Exports increased in volume by 19 percent to 2.2 thousand tons, and in value by 46 percent to HUF 3.15 billion. The biggest buyers of Hungarian asparagus were Germany (1.25 thousand tons, +39 percent) and Switzerland (490 tons, +17 percent) in the examined period. Imports fell by 46 percent to 54.6 tons at the same time. According to AKI PÁIR data, white and green asparagus appeared in the Budapest Wholesale Market in the 14th week, both at the most common price of HUF 3,500/kilogram. For the 19th week, the price of white asparagus fell to HUF 2,000, while that of green asparagus fell to HUF 2,100/kilogram.
