According to the director of Sió, the prices of fruit juices will continue to rise
In the past year, the price of fruit juices has increased by an average of 9.5 percent. The increase in the price of summer juices can be a surprise, especially in the middle of the fruit season. Complex market and economic factors are behind the increase in the price of fruit juices.
Increase in raw material prices: The weather, bacterial infections and shrinking production areas all contribute to rising prices of raw materials. Especially in the case of oranges, where the American continent experienced a dramatic decrease in yields.
Production Costs: Energy and labor costs for manufacturers have risen significantly. In addition, the EPR costs for packaging materials, which are included in the manufacturers’ transfer prices, have also increased.
Trade Excise Taxes: These excise taxes also contribute to the price increase of fruit juices as they increase the cost of distributors.
Lajos Braunmüller, editor-in-chief of Agrársektor, told Pénzcentrum that the price of not only orange juice, but of all fruit juices, has risen significantly in recent years.
Consumption of fruit juices is considered an indulgence and consumers have become more cautious in their spending. Due to the post-pandemic economic situation and general price increases, consumers are more restrained in their purchases.
Dezső Mészáros, the director of Sió-Eckes Kft., emphasized to Pénzcentrum that the decrease in orange production and a bacterial infection called citrus greening further worsen the situation. According to forecasts, the world market price of oranges will continue to rise, which will also push up the price of fruit juices.
The rise in the price of fruit juices is not expected to stop in the short term. The decline in orange yields and plantation damage due to infections will also affect the market in the long term. Stabilization of the situation may take years, as it may take several years for replanting and trees to become productive in infected areas.
