Schwarz Group has received approval from the Romanian competition authority to acquire hypercash retailer La Cocoș.

With the acquisition, the owner of retailers Lidl and Kaufland aims to expand its market presence in Romania.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Christian Groh, CEO of Schwarz Corporate Solutions, said, “We are convinced of La Cocoș’ Romanian identity and strength.

“Therefore, La Cocoș will continue to operate as an independent company. Through future investments, we will consolidate our market position and position La Cocoș for success.”

La Cocos

Founded in 2014, La Cocoș is a Romanian food retailer operating under the hypercash format, with seven stores currently across the country.

In 2025, the retailer reported sales of approximately €300 million.

Schwarz Group emphasised that the hypercash concept will allow the retailer to lower operational costs through large sales areas and a curated product selection, thereby enabling it to offer lower product prices.

Iulian Nica, managing director of La Cocoș, commented, “The collaboration with the companies of the Schwarz Group opens up new perspectives for growth and further development.

“Together we can accelerate the expansion of La Cocoș. This will allow customers in more regions of Romania to benefit from our services, while at the same time strengthening the country’s economy through investments.”

Further Expansion

Schwarz Group intends to continue investing in the Romanian market, with several new La Cocoș branches planned to open in 2026.

The retail group is also considering introducing the La Cocoș’ hypercash model in additional European markets.

In July 2025, it was reported that Schwarz Group was planning the acquisition of a 70% majority stake in La Cocoș.
