875 animals had to be culled at the Rábapordány cattle farm in Győr-Moson-Sopron County due to the foot-and-mouth disease virus – the Minister of Agriculture announced on his social media page on Friday. István Nagy said: since the cattle farm is also an integral part of a pig farm, from an epidemiological point of view, the piglets must also be culled. The minister indicated: “all personal and material conditions are in place to carry out the work, the employees of the animal health authority and uniformed personnel are on site.” He said: the carcasses will be buried in a rural area near Pereszteg, at the state-owned ATEV site. This is the most suitable area designated by the authority for this purpose, which has served this purpose for decades. Monitoring wells will be set up here and the biological laboratory of the Hungarian Armed Forces will also be relocated for the greatest safety of the population, he explained. István Nagy once again strongly urged all farmers to continue to comply with the official regulations in order to protect their own animals; only those whose presence is essential should enter the livestock farm, to pay close attention to the vehicles entering and leaving, the tools, machinery, work clothes and footwear. Furthermore, they should not use feed, litter or equipment from other farms. The Minister of Agriculture added: the rules are strictly monitored and enforced. He highlighted that an epidemiological investigation is underway to find out how the virus could have “jumped” 60 kilometers from the previously infected site. “A holiday is coming, at this time we tend to be more lenient towards various rules,” he said, adding: “Let’s not do this! The virus must be stopped and all possible sources of infection must be eliminated.”
