Rome International Airport’s traffic increased by 21 percent in one year
Rome’s international airport’s passenger traffic grew by 21 percent last year and is expected to grow further this year, CEO Marco Troncone told MTI.
The airport, named after Leonardo Da Vinci but known as Fiumicino, has set another record in recent weeks, as it welcomed around 130 high-level foreign delegations at the same time during the funeral of Pope Francis and the election of the new head of the church.
“We are going through an extraordinary operational test, which we completed in cooperation with the Italian authorities,”
– said Marco Troncone. He called the landing of Air Force One at their airport an iconic moment, adding that Rome airport is also the departure and arrival point for popes whenever they embark on apostolic trips abroad.
Marco Troncone, who has been managing Rome Airports (ADR) since 2020, said that last year they closed with 49.2 million passenger traffic, which was twenty-one percent higher than in 2023. The traffic of Leonardo Da Vinci – Fiumicino Airport grew the most strongly among its European competitors.
In the first four months of this year, a further eight percent increase was recorded, so they plan to count on fifty-three million passengers by the end of 2025. The CEO said that the number of arrivals and departures has increased by ten million since 2019, and in the longer term they want to reach passenger traffic of over 60 million.
He attributes the development, among other things, to the fact that 3.5 billion euros have been spent on the development of the airport over the past twelve years. He indicated that another four hundred million euros will be spent on infrastructure investments this year, and then another five billion euros in the coming years to build a new terminal.
Marco Troncone explained that the airport is no longer just a gateway, but is increasingly trying to offer an experience to the international audience.
