Canola and silver linden honeyed well, but the drought caused serious problems
Hungary has produced a quantity of acacia honey that has not been seen in ten years, but sunflower honey has to be canceled due to the drought – we learn from Híradó via Magyar Nemzet.
Péter Bross, the president of the National Hungarian Beekeeping Association (OMME), recalled that the year promised to be a hopeful season for beekeepers, with outstanding results achieved in the late spring and early summer period. Both canola and silver linden are well honeyed, and the beekeepers were able to produce the best harvest of the past ten years from acacia honey. However, the drought caused serious problems in the second half of the summer.
The country’s beekeeping community has really split in two this year: while beekeepers west of the Danube can end the best year of their lives this year, farmers east of the Danube line have to deal with serious problems, Péter Bross said. He added that although they were afraid that the lack of winter precipitation would discourage acacia flowering, in the end they managed to achieve a much better honey yield in the acacia trees than ever before. According to Péter Bross, the rapeseed also honeyed well this year, as did the beekeepers who graze on the silver flax and achieved excellent results. However, as the summer heatwave and drought intensified, the prospects worsened.
