The 450 shades of Pivo
In the past 20 years some 450 Czech breweries opened and the number of those merely brewing lager beer is going slowly down. It has been a huge challenge also in Hungary to break through the ‘real Czech beer is lager beer’ stereotype, and to make consumers aware of the fact that Czech beer is no more a synonym for cheap beer.
A key player in the process has been Miklós Orvos, who opened a beer house in Budapest named after the famous Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. The beer house sells draught beer from Czech regional and small-scale breweries. The place, however, is not just a simple beer house, but also a community space for guests longing for true cultural experience. Avid craft beer lovers are welcome in Hetedik Lépcső, a beer bar next door also operated by Miklós Orvos. The place specializes in Czech craft beers and offers a very wide selection that is regularly changing.
Two different inns next to each other and two different ways of positioning – isn’t it a great ‘game’, a real workshop for beer gourmets? And this beer-gastro-cultural galaxy built in nearly 15 years is further amplified by’Hetedik Lépcső’, a print magazine about Czech breweries, beers, beer festivals and gastronomy edited by György Vétek. //
