The new consumer protection authority will strive to ensure market balance
The National Trade and Consumer Protection Authority (NKFH), which will be established on January 1, will strive to ensure market balance between businesses and consumers, said the Deputy State Secretary responsible for Economic Development Strategy and Implementation, Consumer Protection and Trade at a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday.
Bence Gerlaki emphasized that the new consumer protection organization will simultaneously be a trade policy and consumer protection authority, because the two areas can guarantee efficient operation by cooperating and complementing each other.
He called the most important task of the authority the protection of citizens’ financial security and health, as well as the protection of families and children, both of which are values that are also included in the Basic Law.
He highlighted the control of advertisements from a child protection perspective and the control of children’s camps.
According to the Deputy Secretary of State, increasing attention should be paid to consumer safety in the online space, and e-commerce will therefore be a priority area of investigation in 2025, including the activities of influencers.
He explained that the government’s goals include uniform application of the law, so government agencies and conciliation bodies conducting consumer protection inspections and investigations must operate based on uniform criteria. In the interests of consumers, it is important to monitor product safety rules, ensure accessibility, and increase consumer awareness, since the most effective means of consumer protection is self-defense.
According to Bence Gerlaki, the institutional system of consumer protection is completed by the operation of numerous state and non-state organizations.
