PENNY Hungary is the first to introduce the sale of crownless pineapple in Hungary
Less is sometimes more: from January, PENNY Hungary will be the first to introduce the sale of pineapple without a crown in Hungary. The innovation not only offers a more practical and affordable solution for customers, but also represents progress in terms of sustainability. The crown makes up about a quarter of the fruit’s volume, thus increasing packaging and transportation efficiency, reducing the environmental footprint.
The new packaging also offers tangible benefits to customers:
- lighter pineapple, easier home delivery,
- less household waste,
- more favorable price than in the case of the previous crown packaging,
- unchanged quality and longer shelf life, the with a familiar taste experience,
- a more practical choice for everyday shopping.
The pineapple crown is removed at harvest, so more fruit can fit in one shipment, which reduces the environmental impact associated with transportation. The crowns are recycled at the production site: about 20 percent of them are used to grow new pineapples, and the rest is returned to the fields as fertilizer.
“We are proud that, in cooperation with the international team, PENNY is the first retail chain in Hungary to introduce crownless pineapple to the market. With this, we have taken another significant step towards sustainable sourcing, and our customers can also access this exotic fruit at a budget-friendly price”
– said Péter Gáti, PENNY Hungary Fresh Goods Purchasing Group Manager.
