Demand for plant-based protein is the engine of the European nut market
In 2024 the European Union maintained its leading position on the global nut market, importing around EUR 6bn worth of nuts.

The main EU importers are Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands

Demand is primarily driven by the food industry and health-conscious consumers who follow a plant-based diet. Almonds, pistachios and walnuts play a prominent role in plant protein supply, especially in the production of vegan snacks and ingredients. The United States is the EU’s biggest supplier, accounting for 37% of total nut imports, while Turkey ranks second with 25%
