The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reaffirmed the safety of aspartame
The International Sweeteners Association ( ISA) welcomes the opinion of the EFSA which again confirmed that the consumption of aspartame is safe.
EFSA's scientific experts thoroughly re- examined all available datas on aspartame and its breakdown products, and it is concluded that aspartame does not pose a safety hazard to consumers.
Aspartame is a low-calorie, intense artificial sweetener. It is a white, odourless powder, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. In Europe, it is authorised to be used as a food additive in foodstuffs such as drinks, desserts, sweets, dairy, chewing gums, energy-reducing and weight control products and as a table-top sweetener.
