Nowadays, the rural regions of the European Union are constantly losing part of their population, heritage, values, and traditions related to agriculture, thanks to, for example, the anti-agrarianism incited by radical green organizations and a part of society. This could endanger EU agriculture and the safe food supply of its population. The “Protect our rural areas!” (Together for heritage protection) aims to contribute to the preservation of the values associated with the countryside and the areas and communities of the EU capable of producing food.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in attacks on agriculture from the direction of radical environmental protection organizations and a part of society, especially in Western Europe, but also in Hungary. Given that the National Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) considers restoring the respect of those active in agriculture to be a priority task, it joined the European citizens’ initiative launched to protect the EU’s rural heritage, food security and food supply.

We must preserve the unique cultural and social heritage of our rural regions for future generations

In order to maintain food security, the survival of the EU’s areas and communities capable of producing food must be ensured. For this, the EU’s commitment to regional heritage, the sustainable growth of rural areas and the promotion of rural living standards is essential, and it must support economically, environmentally and socially sustainable agricultural production and food production.

International initiative

The “Protect our rural areas!” (Together for heritage protection) aims to collect one million signatures by November 1, 2023 at the latest in order to preserve the values associated with rural areas for future generations. In at least seven member states, the number of supporting signatures must reach the minimum threshold required for the given member state, for example 14,805 signatures in Hungary. In this case, the European Commission has to make a decision about what measures it will use to help achieve the goals of the initiative.
