MOHU has installed a new vending machine in Budapest, suitable for bulk redemption. The III. district, the new R2 vending machine – an improved version of the R1 type manufactured by Norwegian TOMRA – can now handle not only plastic and metal beverage cans, but also glass bottles at the same time, in bulk – MOHU told MTI on Thursday.

The advantage of the technology is that the bottles do not have to be thrown into the machine one by one, but even dozens of beverage packages can be poured in at once, which the machine automatically identifies and processes. This solution increases the speed of redemption, reduces queuing time, thus making the redemption process more convenient for consumers – the announcement said.

They recalled that a vending machine suitable for so-called “bag enemas” was first installed in Pilisvörösvár as a test.

They noted that many people return the bottles in large bags. Such a machine can process up to 100 bottles per minute, which is several times the performance of traditional machines. After the positive experiences of the Pilisvörösvár test plant, MOHU decided to install additional bulk machines. Thanks to the additional 6-8 machines, new experiences can be gained regarding return habits.

According to the information, 10-11 million bottles, jars and cans are returned daily in the MOHU REpont system, and by recycling them, almost 3 billion bottles of waste are not released into the environment every year.

Csaba Bozóki, the head of MOHU’s return responsibility, stated in the announcement that since the launch of the mandatory return system, Hungarian consumers have already returned more than 3.6 billion beverage packaging in total. The rapid ramp-up of the process and technological developments show that Hungary is on track to achieve the 90 percent redemption rate set for 2029. According to plans, 6-8 more such vending machines suitable for bagged enemas will be installed across the country this year, and this is being discussed with commercial partners, he added.
