The development of domestic aquaculture also brings with it the development of local hospitality and gastronomy, it contributes greatly to the maintenance of ecosystems, and thus to the European greening goals, emphasized Oszkár Ökrös, deputy state secretary for international relations, in his opening speech at the conference of the European Aquaculture Association in Vienna.

He emphasized that the Hungarian government has the development of aquaculture close to its heart, both within the country’s borders and on a European and wider international scale. We want to strengthen the cooperation between Eastern and Western Europe and participate in programs run under the auspices of the European Union, the United Nations, and the FAO aimed at improving the food supply of developing countries. We must present the natural values of our created world to both younger and more experienced generations, and we must increase environmental awareness, and this requires attitude formation, underlined the deputy state secretary.

The campaign to encourage fish consumption was successful

Oszkár Ökrös mentioned the “Get it!” encouraging fish consumption. and Fish Friday campaigns, the reduction of the consumption tax on fish, and the stimulation of fishing tourism investments. As a result of targeted promotion and other government measures, per capita fish consumption has increased by more than 27 percent since 2013, he emphasized. He added: Hungary has a lot to be proud of in terms of natural and gastronomic values, as 4 Hungarian fish products have also gained EU protection in recent years.

Professional forum, trade exhibition

The four-day conference of the European Aquaculture Association is the most significant sector event at the European level, with around three thousand participants, including scientists, researchers and farmers. In addition to high-quality lectures and professional forums, there was also a trade exhibition, where an 18-square-meter stand symbolizes the role of our country in the organization of the conference and its commitment to quality aquaculture. The domestic aquaculture sector took the lion’s share in the main organization, headed by Dr. László Váradi, who is currently the chairman of the organizing committee and was the chairman and board member of the EAS for many years. This time he received a lifetime achievement award for his selfless work.
