The pre-tax profit of agriculture fell by almost half in 2023
The number of agricultural cooperatives decreased by 5.2 percent to 8,669 in 2023. The sector’s income fell at a much faster rate, by 44.6 percent (!), which was also significant compared to that of the national economy (–7.0 percent). As a result, the pre-tax profit of agriculture amounted to 198.5 billion forints in 2023, which was almost half as large as in the year before the subject year (358.0 billion forints).

In connection with the significant decrease in profit, it should be taken into account that agricultural cooperatives had an outstandingly successful year in 2022. In terms of territory, Transdanubia farms increased their income the most in 2022, so it is not surprising that in 2023 the pre-tax profit in Transdanubia decreased the most. The indicator in question increased only in Central Hungary, by 16.8 percent, but this only meant a 3.9 billion forint increase in income. The decrease in income experienced in Transdanubia is not only significant compared to the outstanding result in 2022, but also noteworthy compared to 2021.
