The first Hungarian pilot project demonstrating the practical application of artificial intelligence (AI) in public administration, city management and the development of public services at the city level is being implemented in Miskolc. The initiative was announced by László Palkovics, Government Commissioner, József Tóth-Szántai, Mayor, and Ferenc Dietz, President of Gábor Dénes University, at a press conference on Wednesday, which was specially opened by the city’s own AI avatar, “M.I.SKOLC”.

Miskolc to become a data-driven city

László Palkovics, Government Commissioner responsible for artificial intelligence, said: Miskolc is the first Hungarian city to officially initiate the construction of city management on data-based decision-making systems in the future. “The data generated during the operation of city companies is suitable for the municipality to use AI to plan the future of the settlement more effectively and to respond more flexibly to current challenges,” he said.

The government commissioner emphasized that AI-based governance is also part of the renewed version of the Hungarian artificial intelligence strategy adopted in 2020. Important elements of this are the regulation of data assets, the launch of the data economy, the development of the technological background, and the establishment of transparent and targeted support systems.

AI is not only an opportunity, but also a community tool

According to Mayor József Tóth-Szántai, who spoke at the event, Miskolc must redefine itself in the coming years. “The goal is to turn the steel city into a smart city, the city of the Bükk, where new ideas and technologies determine the direction of development,” he said.

He emphasized that the application of AI is not only a question of innovation, but can also be a practical tool for city management in improving public safety, optimizing public transport, or increasing the efficiency of community services. The city government is also planning an AI conference once a year, where the results achieved will be evaluated and new goals will be set.
