Brewers are hoping for a warm summer again this year
Although major sporting events temporarily have a positive effect on the development of beer consumption, this year the weather will also decide whether the beer market can correct itself upwards after last year’s 10 percent decline. In the long term, beers belonging to the premium and super premium segments are gaining ground – beers in this category now account for a third of the total turnover – and the popularity of non-alcoholic beers flavored with exotic fruits could be explosive this year.
Last year, based on the data of the five most important beer producers present in the country, the amount of beer sold in Hungary was just over 5.4 million hectoliters, which represented a 10 percent drop compared to the level of 6.01 million hectoliters measured in 2022. This year, it may be possible to make up for some of this backlog, but in the long term, in line with global trends, beer consumption will also trend down in parallel with the decline in alcohol consumption.
“One of the most important factors influencing the development of beer consumption is the weather, which is difficult to plan even weeks in advance. Although the industry also expects the positive impact of major summer sports events, especially the European Football Championship and the Olympics, on the development of beer consumption, their impact is not significant in this regard.
