Hungarians do not really have a sweet tooth in international terms
In European and Central Asian countries, there are significant differences in daily sugar consumption per capita, and the Hungarian population is certainly not one of the big sugar consumers. Based on the UN’s data, it is not possible to demonstrate that the inhabitants of richer countries consume more sugar, while the poorer ones consume less.
According to UN 2019 data, Belgians, Poles and Danes consumed the most sugar on average, while Albanians, Kyrgyz and Luxembourgers consumed the least sugar. The differences between these European and Central Asian countries are striking.
The moderate sugar consumption of Hungarians also illustrates that participation in daily sugar consumption per capita depends on individual factors and does not necessarily follow the general pattern of economic factors.
Differences in sugar consumption show that there is no uniform trend in sugar consumption among the populations of the regions. The general correlation between wealth and sugar consumption is not confirmed based on UN data.
