The Hungarian Tourist Agency welcomes the transfer of Liszt Ferenc Airport to Hungarian ownership
The capital’s airport is the country’s primary gateway, and in 2023 the majority of foreign visitors arrived by plane. The primary strategic goal of Hungarian tourism is to improve the accessibility of our country. With the majority state ownership of Budapest Airport, significant infrastructural developments and flight extensions that greatly strengthen the international position of Hungarian tourism can be realized. The Budapest airport has returned home, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) wrote in its statement on Friday.
It was announced: 2023 became the new record year in the domestic history of the sector, and tourism took off this year as well. The fact that international inbound traffic almost recovered last year contributed to this to a large extent. Compared to 2022, we welcomed 7.1 million guests, 18 percent more than in 2022, according to the data of the National Tourist Information Center.
Their turnover of 19.7 million guest nights increased by more than 12 percent compared to 2022. The rate of expansion continued this year, the number of 7.2 million international guest nights generated in the first 5 months of the year already surpassed last year by almost 12 percent. Liszt Ferenc International Airport played an essential role in the strong recovery of arrivals – the announcement states.
The MTÜ draws attention to the fact that the majority of guest nights were registered in those domestic destinations – Budapest, Balaton, Debrecen and their surroundings – by accommodation providers that also have an international airport.
