Hungarian strawberry’s superb performance
Data from the Agricultural Economics Research Institute (AKI) and KSH’s market price information system (PÁIR) show that 11 percent more cattle was slaughtered in Hungary (calculated in live weight) in January 2013 than a year before. Hungary’s live cattle export was up 21 percent according to KSH, while our live cattle import was down 24 percent in the first month of the year. The price of wheat was around HUF 64,500 in the second half of April – 16 percent above the level of the same period in 2012. Flour (BL 55) cost HUF 90/kg, while one year ago it was HUF 78/kg. USDA forecasts the level of wheat production to be 655.4 million tons in 2013, which is 6 percent less than it was in 2012. Analysts say that the global export of wheat will be around 135.7 million tons in the 2012-2013 season. The European Union and Australia are expected to export more than originally predicted. On the 16th week Hungarian strawberry was available at a HUF 1,600/kg producer price at the Budapest Wholesale Market, competing with HUF 525-800/kg Greek and Spanish strawberries.
