The president of the Hungarian Trade Union Confederation proposes a 12.5% increase in the minimum wag
The current level of the Hungarian minimum wage is 50 percent of the average wage, but it does not even reach 60 percent of the median wage, which justifies the need for a significant increase, said Zlati Róbert, the president of the Hungarian Trade Union Confederation. In the ATV Start program, he explained that the employees rightfully expect a minimum wage increase of more than 10 percent.
According to Róbert Zlati, it is time for the minimum wage to cross the psychological threshold of HUF 300,000. He believes that the weak performance of the Hungarian economy in the European Union justifies a more significant increase. Hungary’s minimum wage levels are significantly lower than the EU average, so according to him, a 12.5 percent increase would be justified.
The union leader rejected the employer’s arguments that the higher increases cannot be achieved and could lead to job losses. Zlati emphasized that such negative consequences have not yet been proven. However, he pointed out that there are no specific data on how such an increase would affect the Hungarian economy.
