The Hungarian Food Bank is putting together 44,000 food packages from the proceeds of ALDI’s first Advent market
ALDI Hungary’s first Advent market, which the company organized in the parking lot of its Pannónia Street store in Budapest’s 13th district between December 19 and 21, ended successfully. Over the three days, several thousand people visited the location, where they could experience the atmosphere of Christmas markets at ALDI store prices. ALDI donated the entire proceeds of the event, 5.5 million forints, to the Hungarian Food Bank Association, to which it has donated 3 billion forints worth of food so far this year.
The parking lot of ALDI’s Pannónia Street store in the 13th district was transformed for three days. The traffic was replaced by ALDI’s first Advent market, where visitors could put together their fair menu for up to 600 forints per person, while children were treated to a free carousel throughout the fair. The festive experience was enhanced by the presentation of ALDI’s own-brand Christmas offerings, which were also available for tasting on site.
Over the three afternoons, thousands of visitors visited the Advent market, where, in addition to the fair’s delicacies – from bread and crackers, vegan apple triangles, hot dogs and pretzels, mulled wine and tea – guests could escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life for a while and enjoy the festive atmosphere. ALDI donated the entire proceeds of the fair, more than 5.5 million forints, to the Hungarian Food Bank, from which the charitable organization will assemble and deliver approximately 44,000 food packages to those in need, families in difficult situations, and people for whom even everyday food procurement is a serious challenge.
“We consider the first ALDI Advent Fair to be a great success: several thousand people came in three days and were able to experience the atmosphere of a Christmas fair at a low price. It was a special pleasure to see that we brought smiles to the faces of many families and children. We will donate the entire proceeds of the fair to the Hungarian Food Bank, because the festive season is truly complete when we can bring joy to others”
– said Bernhard Haider, national managing director of ALDI Hungary Food Bt.
2025: 3 billion forints worth of food donations to the Food Bank
The cooperation between ALDI and the Hungarian Food Bank goes back many years: Food Bank volunteers regularly deliver products from the discount chain’s stores that are still suitable for human consumption, but for example, have cosmetic defects, damaged packaging or are close to their expiration date, to those in need. In 2025, approximately 1,650 tons of food were donated to the Food Bank from ALDI stores participating in the food rescue, and nearly 150 tons from the central warehouse in Biatorbágy, so the company contributed a total of more than 3 billion forints worth of food this year to help ensure that donations reach communities and people who need them the most.
“Our cooperation with ALDI has been exemplary for years: not only does a significant amount of food reach families in need, but during the holiday season, small but important gestures also receive special attention. This year, ALDI donated a total of fourteen Christmas trees, as well as decorations and food packages in seven cities – Bonyhád, Pécs, Dunaföldvár, Dunaújváros, Paks, Szeged and Debrecen – which our volunteers deliver to people in difficult situations, so that the holiday can speak of joy and hope to as many people as possible”
– said András Nagygyörgy, the Food Bank’s director of external relations.
