Domestic watermelon is very popular abroad

The melon yield can reach up to 240 thousand tons this year – Magyar Hírlap Online wrote. Half of this amount goes for export, mainly to Germany. The melon growers expect around 110 HUF per kilo consumer price in the domestic market.

Watermelon production areas increased this year in Hungary, by about five percent compared with last year. This year this fruit is cultivated on 5300-5500 hectares. (Twenty-five years ago the melon-growing area was almost three times larger.) Dorcsinecz Balázs, board member of the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organisation and Product Board told Magyar Hírlap Online that melon growing gives livelyhood to almost one thousand families in Hungary.
