German airline Lufthansa expects weaker demand for flights to the United States in the third quarter after a summer recovery, said CEO Carsten Spohr.

According to the company’s CEO, demand for flights to the United States was better in the first quarter than in the previous year, but they expect a leveling off in the third quarter.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss and ITA Airways, operates 60 flights a day to the United States.

Carsten Spohr also said that the decline in demand in the third quarter due to higher prices will be partially offset by stronger demand for flights from the United States, and the airline will increase the proportion of tickets sold there.

The CEO also highlighted that the restructuring currently underway at Lufthansa is progressing according to plan.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s after-tax loss widened by nearly 21 percent in the first quarter, data released in April showed. Its after-tax loss rose to 885 million euros from 734 million euros a year earlier, while its adjusted operating loss narrowed by 15 percent, from 849 million euros to 722 million euros.

The company reported that revenue rose 10 percent to 8.127 billion euros, while operating expenses rose 6 percent to 9.511 billion euros.

Lufthansa carried 24,291 million passengers in the first quarter, virtually the same as a year earlier. The load factor fell from 79.7 percent to 78.7 percent.
