The Competition Authority launched an investigation into Lidl’s advertising
The Economic Competition Authority (GVH) has launched an investigation against Lidl Magyarország Kereskedelmi Bt., because the company allegedly misleadingly claimed in its advertising campaigns that “Lidl is the cheapest grocery chain”, the GVH told MTI on Monday.
It is highlighted: from the first of July, the price monitor operated by GVH will show exactly which retail chains offer the most favorable prices in each product category on a given day.
According to the information, the competition office noticed that Lidl Magyarország Kereskedelmi Bt. made the claim “Lidl is the cheapest grocery chain” in its commercial communication from February 13, 2023. This slogan may suggest to the average consumer that the company’s product range is comparable to every other Hungarian supermarket chain. is actually the cheapest in comparison, and which statement is believed to be untrue. Furthermore, the non-representative survey carried out by Pénzcentrum indicated in the commercial communication is probably not suitable for objective, factual verification of the market leadership claim of the company subject to the procedure.
