Lidl Hungary joined the donation convoy
Lidl Hungary has joined the Hungarian Food Bank Association’s Donation Convoy, which draws attention to hunger and the importance of healthy and sustainable nutrition in a spectacular way. The company is thus supporting disadvantaged families with another measure: this time, it offered a total of more than 16,500 pieces of non-perishable food – including pasta, canned goods, biscuits and flour – to help those in need.
World Food Day is held on October 16th every year, with the aim of drawing attention to humanity’s food problems and urging solutions. On this occasion, the Hungarian Food Bank Association and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organize the Donation Convoy every year, in which Lidl Hungary also participated. As part of this year’s 20th anniversary Donation Convoy, trucks from participating companies, including Lidl’s electric truck, crossed the capital and transported a total of 40 tons of donations to the organization’s warehouse. The Food Bank will use the products to put together food packages for those in need.
“Supporting disadvantaged families is one of the most important pillars of Lidl Hungary’s social responsibility. We are proud that this year we can contribute nearly 9 tons of non-perishable food to the noble goal of the Donation Convoy. As an ethical and responsible company, we consider it extremely important to take an active role in the work to eradicate hunger – whether quantitatively or qualitatively – to the best of our ability. We strive for this through our measures to reduce food waste and our food donation cooperation, as well as through the development of our quality and excellent value-for-money product range”
– said Zita Szlavikovics, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Lidl Hungary.
For Lidl, food donation is an integral part of everyday operations: its charitable partner organizations regularly supports those in need with food donations. In addition, it provides assistance to tens of thousands of people in need on a monthly basis with its comprehensive food rescue program, which in the past financial year helped nearly 900 million forints worth of food remaining in stores but still edible, and provided real help to those in need. In addition to store sales, the company also donates its leftover food from its outings to charitable causes. This summer, it donated leftover vegetables, fruits and baked goods from the Balaton swim, the Campus Festival and the SZIN to charitable organizations, thus supporting a total of 700 people in need.
Lidl Hungary is committed to remaining an active player in domestic food rescue in the long term, and to supporting programs that both help those in disadvantaged situations and reduce food waste.
