Lidl Hungary achieved outstanding success in supporting the domestic wine sector in 2025: it contributed more than 18 billion forints to the domestic and foreign sales of Hungarian wineries. This result represents a 50 percent increase compared to the data five years earlier, while the quality of the offer is also confirmed by internationally recognized Master of Wine certifications.

Lidl Hungary has been a committed partner of domestic wineries for more than a decade. Within the framework of the “Lidl for Hungarian Suppliers” program launched in 2013, the supermarket chain prioritizes the promotion of excellent Hungarian bottled wines and, in addition to increasing domestic sales, actively helps domestic producers enter international markets through the “Lidl Wine Expo Hungary”. The company’s strategic success is proven by the fact that in 2025, customers removed approximately 16 million bottles of Hungarian wine from domestic shelves, and total sales – including foreign market results – approached 30 million bottles. All these results clearly prove that Hungarian wines continue to maintain their popularity and competitiveness in both domestic and foreign Lidl stores.

Outstanding success in domestic and international markets

As one of the country’s largest bottled wine exporters, the company plays a decisive role in the export of domestic agriculture and considers it its heart’s desire to make the quality products of Hungarian wineries available in as many places as possible. “Thanks to our international network, last year more than 13.5 million bottles of Hungarian wine reached foreign markets, to 14 European countries. Since 2014, we have sold a total of more than 260 million bottles, nearly half of which found a home abroad, where Tokaj wines continue to be the most sought-after. These results clearly show that domestic wines are popular not only at home, but also on international markets. We are proud that Lidl is taking an active role in supporting the development of the wine sector and strengthening the domestic economy,” said Zoltán Nepp, Purchasing Director of Lidl Hungary.

Further recognition for Hungarian wines

The high quality of Lidl Hungary’s wine offering was also confirmed by the assessment of Richard Bampfield, Master of Wine*, a renowned expert in the international wine world. During the international 100-point test – which analyzes the aroma, complexity and balance of wines – 12 Hungarian items received a rating of over 85 points, and 5 of these wines achieved an “outstanding” result of over 90 points. From now on, these scores can also be seen on the price tags of wines found on store shelves, which serve as a reference point when purchasing. Among the qualified products, the company’s own blended Grand Tokaj 5-puttonyos Tokaji Aszú, which scored 92 points, and Amethyst Tokaji Szamorodni, which closed the test with a score of 95 points. This feedback is an important compass for customers and also proof that the items available on the shelves of the discount chain can hold their own on a global scale.

Lidl Hungary works with several renowned wineries, with which it blends exclusive wines available exclusively in the discount chain’s range. The company works with nearly 30 permanent Hungarian wine suppliers, and together with the special offer, it provides an opportunity for about 100 domestic producers to appear. The domestic audience is primarily looking for Tokaj, Balaton and Kunság wines. The company’s goal is to support the development of Hungarian wineries in the long term and for Hungarian wines to occupy a strong, competitive position on the international market.
